Amrozowicz Named NCWA Coach of the Year

BOSSIER CITY, La. - The Apprentice School Director of Wrestling Micah Amrozowicz was named the NCWA Coach of the Year, but he credits the award as a testament to the staff that he has built around him.

"The National Coach of the Year was an unexpected honor," said Amrozowicz. "That said, it is a testament to this amazing coaching staff. Nothing we have achieved could have been done with only me running things. I owe it all to them."

Starting with the volunteer coaches, Kyle Spruill, Alec Deutel, Dillon Messick and Jordan Robins.

"Kyle has been a staple of this coaching staff for many years now, has taken on a volunteer role and it still feels as if he is there full time. He has had a huge impact to how we manage strength and conditioning, he is a philosopher, and one that is able to help motivate certain individuals. He has two children of his own at home, and yet still finds time to support the Apprentice wrestling family.

"Alec is a first year volunteer. Finished his wrestling career with us last season. He is a natural leader and a supervisor in O38. He spends a lot of time with the middle and larger guys on the team, and has helped tremendously keeping that portion on track with technique and even filling in as a drill partner as needed.

"Dillon, much like Alec, is a first year volunteer. He finished his wrestling career with us last year, and is also a natural leader. He is an Apprentice Craft instructor in X32 in the Gallery. He spends a lot of time with the light weights and keeps them on track with technique and fills in as needed as a drill partner.

"Finally, Jordan is in the same category as Alec and Dillon. Jordan finished his wrestling career last year, and is also a natural leader. He is an Apprentice Craft instructor in X32 on CVN 79. He spends his time helping coach the women's team and occasionally the men as well."

Amrozowicz then goes on to thank the rest of his men's wrestling staff, consisting of William Sorey, Marcus Chevres and Colton Messick.

"William has been the foundation to recruiting and has transformed the future of this team in an immediate way. The talent and numbers we bring in has doubled since taking on this role, which had a huge impact on what we were able to accomplish this year. He not only handles all of the recruiting but also works hand in hand with the largest guys on the team. He spends as many hours in the practice room as any other coach and then spends the same amount of hours behind the scenes with stats and recruiting. Surely we would not have had the success or as bright of a future without him.

"Marcus is the longest standing assistant coach on staff and in fact my first recruit. He is the go to guy for technique. He is the best corner coach in the game. He can see things before the happen. One would say he is a wizard.  He is and continues to be one of the biggest influences in the room. The team rallies around his voice and we would not be the same without him.

"Colton, our associate head coach, is like a drill sergeant. His energy is unstoppable and his organizational skills keep the team moving in the right direction. Coaching 40 wrestlers can be like herding cats at times, and he makes it easy for us all. Like Kyle Spruill, he has had a huge impact on how we strength train and condition, and is eager to jump in as a drill partner and challenge the young bucks from light weights to middle weights. He keeps the room moving and holds the team to high standards. We would not be the same without him."

Finally, Amrozowicz highlights the newly developed women's staff of Kris Smith, Erin Mosley and Chad Simmons, as a huge part of this award.

"Kris, our associate head women's coach, comes to the game with a vast knowledge of freestyle. Which is important  because over half the season is competing in the Olympic style of wrestling.

"Erin, who is by far the face of our women's program, sometimes referred to as Coach Mom, has two kids at home and still finds the time to be there. Her experience as a female wrestler, what she is exceptionally good at, and her health and fitness knowledge are something we cannot afford to lose.

"Chad, who started the year off as a men's coach, was asked to lean in and help with the female side of the program. Little did we know that he would become the mother Goose of all the females. His characteristics work perfectly with our female wrestlers and has really taken on the role. From technique, to athletic psychiatrist, he has the team on his shoulders and they have a bright future because of his leadership and tutelage."

When he was asked if he was honored to be the National Men's Coach of the Year, Amrozowicz responded, "I am honored to coach beside this great staff we call the wrestling family. I am more proud that I helped coach each of these individuals as wrestlers, and now as coaches. They are a representation of many years of hard work, and the fact that we are this deep as a coaching staff shows WE are doing the right things. This team is built on family values, love, and respect."
