LYNCHBURG, Va. - For the first time in program history, The Apprentice School men's and women's wrestling teams have captured the Mid-Atlantic Conference Championships with their wins on Sunday at Liberty University.
On the men's side, six Builders claimed gold. At 133,
Bruno Alves won his quarterfinal via 16-1 technical fall before earning falls in the semifinals and finals to finish atop the podium. At 141,
Jakob Brown won a 13-8 decision in the quarterfinals and, after a forfeit in the semifinals, won a tight 7-6 decision in the finals.
The top finishes kept coming at 149 as
David Norris got a pair of falls in the quarterfinals and semifinals before taking the top spot in the weight class by forfeit as he would have wrestled teammate
Amari Williams in the finals. Williams won a 10-3 decision in the quarterfinals before a first period fall in the semis.
Josh Seaton was the top finisher at 184 pounds after a fall in the quarterfinals was backed up by a 14-4 major decision and a 13-9 decision to claim gold.
Caleb Hartung won the 235 pound division with a pair of falls leading up to a 4-1 decision win in the championship, while
DJ Uribes knocked down the field at 285 with a fall, a technical fall and a sudden victory win in the championship.
The Builders also had top finishes from
Lucas Vannostrand (2nd, 125),
Landon Kissell (2nd, 165),
Matthew Henson (2nd, 174),
Logan Eastman (3rd, 157), Riley Ingles (3rd, 184),
David McElravy (3rd, 197),
Grayson Starrett (3rd, 235),
Hunter Ray (4th, 157) and
Ethan Baker (4th, 174).

Robert Tovornik (141), Jason McKee (174),
Jordan Butler (184),
Kaleb Ivie (197),
Austin Moore (235) and
Spencer Green (285) all finished fifth.
The men amassed 224 points, besting Liberty, who finished in a distant second at 206.5 points. In a very distant third was Clemson at 97.5, followed by Virginia Tech (79) and James Madison (47.5).
On the women's side,
Skylar Schaefer,
Ida Pellei and
Siddie Hoffen all claimed gold in their respective divisions. Schaefer won her only match of the day at 131, winning by fall in just 40 seconds. Pellei claimed four falls on the day at 141, all but one of which came in the first period, while Hoffen won two falls and won by medical forfeit in her third match of the day.
The women tied with Liberty for the team title, getting 40 points each, followed by Tennessee at 16 points in third.
The wrestling teams will next be in action at nationals down in Bossier City, Louisiana, on March 13.
