DUBOIS, Pa. - The third-seeded Apprentice School baseball team fell in extra innings to second-seeded Penn State DuBois, 1-0, on Tuesday night at rainy Showers Field.
The Builders and Lions had a pitcher's duel for the ages with neither starting pitcher blinking throughout their outings. PSU DuBois got a runner to third in the second inning before
Zander Mizelle shut the door. The Lions went on to load the bases in the third before a double play ended the frame to keep everything scoreless.
Apprentice found themselves in another tight spot in the fifth as DuBois had runners on second and third, but again Mizelle got a strikeout to escape the fifth. The Builders went on to load up the bases in the top of the sixth, but DuBois's Taylor Boland got back-to-back strikeouts to escape the inning without a run crossing.
After both teams failed to score in the seventh, the international tiebreaker went into effect for the extra innings. The Builders got
Tyler Smith over to third base and had runners on the corners with two outs before Christian Hopp got a strikeout after having to enter the game on short notice due to injury to end the inning.
The Lions went on to lay down a bunt to start the bottom of the eighth to move the runner over to third. After intentionally loading the bases, the Builders got one batter to strike out before the Lions drew a four-pitch walk to end the game and stay in the winner's bracket.
Mizelle was stellar, going 6.2 innings while surrendering just five hits and four walks. He fanned five along the way. The Builders mustered just two hits with
Hunter Johnson and
Caleb Russell each going 1-for-4 on the day.
Apprentice will now fall into the elimination bracket and will take on No. 4 MACU at 1 p.m. in a win-or-go-home contest. This season, the Builders are 4-2 against their New South Athletic Conference rival.
