ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - The Apprentice School baseball team improved to 5-1 in New South Athletic Conference play with two run-rule victories over MACU Monday afternoon on the road.
GAME 1 - AS 10, MACU 0 (6 inn.)
The Builders jumped on the Mustangs early and often in the first game of the day, starting with a single run in the first inning on a
Jett Winslow RBI single.
Jaeden Anderson copied that in the second inning to double the AS lead before the offense exploded in the third.
Apprentice threw up six runs in the third inning, starting with RBI doubles from Winslow and
Jackson Thomas to score the first two runs of the inning before Mustang pitching woes allowed two runs to come in via walk and another on a wild pitch.
Isaac McCallister capped off the big inning with a sacrifice fly that made the score 8-0. The offense went quiet until the sixth inning when the Builders got to the 10-run margin on a Thomas RBI single followed by a balk to get to the final score.
Nick Redman got the win, going five innings and allowing just two hits and a walk. He struck out six batters along the way.
GAME 2 - AS 16, MACU 1 (5 inn.)
The offense kept coming in the second game of the day, starting with a pair in the first. Thomas brought home
Nate Yeary on a Mustang error before
Landon Turner singled to plate
Baker Green to put the visitors up, 2-0. After a Mustang run in the bottom of the frame, the Builders added five more in the second.
Jordan Higgins doubled to start the scoring followed by three runs scoring on a Winslow single and a Mustang error to push the score to 6-1.
Seth Harrison brought Winslow home on a single to end the inning.
Two more Apprentice runs came across in the third, but the highlight came in the fourth inning for the Builders. Having already scored two in the frame, Harrison hit a grand slam to blow open the lead to 15-1. A balk brought home the final run of the game in the fifth inning.
Brayden Hayes earned the win, going four innings and fanning five. The one run allowed was unearned.
Harrison finished the twinbill 3-for-4 at the plate with six RBI. Winslow went 3-for-5 with four runs scored and four RBI.
