The Apprentice School ventured to Dover, Delaware on Saturday
and fell 48-0 to 11th-ranked Wesley College in an
Atlantic Central Football Conference matchup at Dr. Scott D. Miller
Stadium.
Wesley started the scoring on the opening kickoff as return
specialist Larry Beavers took the kickoff 79 yards for the first
touchdown. The extra-point attempt was blocked by Adante
Hunter of the Builders as Wesley held a 6-0 lead.
After forcing a fumble, the Wolverines scored on its first
offensive possession as Mike Pennewell capped a 12 play, 66-yard
drive with an eight-yard run for a 13-0 lead with 7:21 left in the
first quarter.
Each team turned the ball over three times in the contest.
Wesley's defense caused the next score as Eddie Donisi returned an
interception 25 yards to give the Wolverines a 20-0 lead with four
minutes left in the quarter.
After a scoreless second quarter, the Wolverines struck quickly
in the third scoring twice in a 67 second span. Pennewell
recorded his second of three touchdowns on a 24-yard run with 11:58
left. Following another Builder punt, Beavers struck again
returning the punt 43 yards for his second score of the day to give
Wesley a 34-0 lead with 10:51 left.
Pennewell finished his scoring with a five-yard run with 2:29
left in the third to put Wesley up 41-0. They finished the
scoring with 13:16 left as Jason Schatz connected with Sean
McAndrew on a 48-yard scoring pass.
Freshman Kieron Paulin was the leading rusher for the Builders
carrying the ball 14 times for 42 yards. Junior quarterback
Phil Caralla was 18-of-43 for 125 yards with two
interceptions. Sophomore Bryan Cain was his favorite target
catching six passes for 52 yards, while sophomore Teo Ellis caught
five for 47 yards.
Defensively, sophomore Jeremy Drayton and freshman Andre Sanders
were the leading tacklers with eight each. Freshman Josh
Lofton and junior Robert Hannah were next with seven. Hannah
recorded a tackle for loss, pass breakup and a fumble recovery.
Apprentice School has its bye week next weekend and will return
home on November 1 to face Webber International at 1 pm on Trades
Day.
