FAIRFAX, VA. - Junior Sam Arnold ran for 132 yards and one
touchdown, while junior quarterback Phil Caralla threw for 163
yards and two scores as the Apprentice School defeated George Mason
28-10 at Robinson Field.
Arnold scored the first touchdown for the Builders on its
opening possession as he scampered in from the four-yardline.
The touchdown drive took five minutes and covered 70 yards as the
Builders went up 7-0.
The Patriots answered with a turn from its defense as Josh Fink
forced a fumble and rambled 60 yards to tie the game with 2:57 left
in the first quarter. After forcing the Builders to turn the
ball over on downs, George Mason then took the lead as John
Moorhead nailed a 32-yard field goal with 11:36 left in the half to
go up 10-7.
Apprentice School answered quickly as on its first play
following that score, Caralla connected with sophomore Bryan Cain
on a 44-yard slant pass that Cain took to the end zone.
Junior Matt Edelen's extra-point conversion put the Builders back
up 14-10 just 19 seconds later.
In the second half, the Builders defense forced a turnover and
recovered on the Patriots 22. Three plays later sophomore
Reggie George pushed his way in from the four to go up 21-10 with
7:10 left in the third quarter.
Caralla concluded the scoring early in the fourth as he finished
off an 87-yard, 10-play drive connecting with Teo Ellis on a
one-yard scoring pass with 12:48 left in the game for the final
28-10 margin.
On the night, the Builders held the Patriots to 126 yards of
total offense, including only two yards rushing the ball.
Apprentice School gained 376 yards of total offense with 213
of those on the ground.
"It's always good to get the first win," said Apprentice School
first-year coach Michael Vite. "We played hard for 60 minutes
and overcame a few things along the way. "
