Football Falls At Salisbury In ACFC Opener

SALISBURY, MD. - The Apprentice School football team started their Atlantic Central Football Conference season on Saturday up Route 13 against perennial conference powerhouse Salisbury University.  Unfortunately for the Builders, the Sea Gulls found an offensive stride on Saturday.

Bryan Woolson and Brandon Norwood ran for a pair of scores apiece and quarterback Sean Kelly threw for 146 yards and three touchdowns as the Sea Gulls defeated Apprentice School 77-7.

The opening portion of the first quarter showed a Sea Gull team that was turning the ball over.  Salisbury fumbled on the opening kickoff giving the Builders possession on the Sea Gull 21.  Salisbury's defense stiffened and a 45-yard field goal attempt was blocked on the Builders first drive.

On the ensuing possession Kelly's pass was picked off by Louis Norwood on the Apprentice 20.  That drive saw the Builders go down to the Salisbury 35 before being forced to punt.

Salisbury found its scoring stride following that possession as they scored on four straight possessions in a total of eight plays to take a 28-0 lead on a Jonathan Briscoe 24-yard touchdown run with 11:34 left in the first half.  The Sea Gulls pushed the lead to 49-0 at the 11:40 mark of the third quarter as Kelly threw the last of his three touchdowns hitting Briscoe on a 15 yard scoring pass.

Apprentice School cracked the scoreboard on the ensuing possession as junior Reggie George broke through the left side of the Sea Gull line and rambled for a 67-yard touchdown run.  That run is the fourth-longest in the last 24 years and pushed George to a career-high 116 yards on 13 carries. He becomes the first Builder rusher to break 100-yards on Salisbury in this decade.

The Builders amassed 287 yards of total offense in the game as quarterback Phil Caralla was 11-of-21 for 153 yards throwing.  Freshman James Abbs and junior Bryan Cain each caught five passes for 88 and 50 yards respectively.

Apprentice School returns to the home field on October 10 as they take on NCAA Division II Lake Erie College for Trades Day starting at 1 pm.
