NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - The Apprentice School lost its season finale
to in-state rival Southern Virginia 14-10 in the 60th
annual Oyster Bowl game played at Apprentice Field on Saturday.
After a slow first quarter where both teams fought to find
footing on a soggy field, the Builders scratched the scoreboard
first as senior quarterback Phil Caralla capped off a 55-yard drive
with an eight-yard run with 13:55 left. Nicholas Foor's
extra-point attempt gave the Builders a 7-0 advantge.
Following a pair of quick three and out series' for the Knights,
the Builders struck again as Foor finished a 44-yard drive by
nailing a 30-yard field goal at the seven minute mark for a 10-0
Apprentice School lead.
The Knights cracked the scoreboard late in the first half after
holding the Builders on a fourth down play on the Apprentice
46. They marched down and quarterback Sam Trulock connected
with Ryan McGinn on an eight -yard scoring pass with 19 seconds
left in the half to cut the deficit to 10-7.
The second half saw both defenses step up and keep teams out of
the end zone with one Southern Virginia exception. After
holding the Builders on downs on the Knight 32, they drove 68 yards
in nine plays ending with a Brandon Ostler six-yard run with 7:09
left in the third quarter for the 14-10 lead that they held
throughout.
For the Builders, Caralla completed 15-of-29 for 220 yards with
senior Teo Ellis catching five of those for a career-best 109
yards. Senior Sam Arnold ran 28 times for 104 yards to lead
the ground game, while junior Jeremy Drayton paced the defense with
10 tackles.
