RECORD: Apprentice School 14-3
ON THE MAT: The Apprentice School opened competition on Friday afternoon in the 2014 National Collegiate Wrestling Association Collegiate Cup Dual Championships and went 3-0 in day one action.
With the three wins, Apprentice School Head Coach Bruce Shumaker won his 100th match as the Builders leader. Shumaker, in his seventh season with the Builders now has a record of 101-52. Ironically in the match that Shumaker got his 100th career win, junior heavyweight Ian Jones won by fall in 1:06 to also earn his 100th career win. Jones, a two-time NCWA All-American, sports a 101-24 career record now.
The Builders used the optional scoring system (see below) in the first match of the day and defeated Tennessee Temple University 143-9 as the Builders won all 11 bouts. Chris Kennedy (157/4:06), CW Sorey (184/6:29), and Josh Rodriguez (197/1:58) all won their bouts by fall to lead the Builders.
In the next match with Stony Brook University, the Builders won 10 out of 11 dual bouts to take a 52-6 decision. Six Builders won their bouts by fall with Rob Styron (125/1:08), Ty Watkins (141/1:18), Brian Beatson (157/2:13), Rodriguez (197/4:34) and Kyle Cox (235/2:15) joined Jones with six-point wins.
The final match of Friday saw the Builders take on Mid Atlantic Conference foe East Tennessee State University and the Builders scored a 49-6 win. Apprentice School won nine of the 11 bouts and earned wins by fall in three of those. Patrik Foxworth had the quickest fall of the day for the Builders winning in 40 seconds at 149 pounds, while Garcia (157/1:11) and Phillip Porto (174/4:40) joined Jones (285/4:56) with wins by fall.
OPTIONAL SCORING SYSTEM
The NCWA has approved use of an optional scoring system falls, disqualifications and injury defaults would earn 15 team points, and forfeits would earn 16. A 10-point spread in the individual match score would signify a technical fall, but both wrestlers would earn their points toward their team's overall score. All other bout scores would simply be added to the team score.
Both teams have to agree before the match, which only happened in the opening round match against Tennessee Temple.
NEXT UP
The Builders advanced to the quarterfinals where they'll face sixth-seeded Middle Tennessee State University at noon. A win puts them into the semifinals at 4 pm where they'll face the winner of tenth-seeded Grand Valley State University and second-seeded Grand Canyon University. A loss at noon will put them in the fifth-place bracket where they'll face the loser of Grand Valley-Grand Canyon at 2 pm.
