Builders drop first game of week long homestand

Box Score

Newport News, VA – Tuesday night was the start of a 4-game homestand this week to close out the Apprentice Women's Basketball regular season.  After spending most of their season on the road, the Builders were anxious to play in front of their home crowd and hopefully coming away with some much-deserved wins.  Tonight, they would face a team in Washington-Adventist, who they had met before earlier in the season.  However, this time Coach Hill and her team were looking to start the homestand out on the right foot.

Apprentice came up with the defensive stop as the first quarter began, but they were not able to take advantage of it on their offensive possession.  The Shock capitalized on that, scoring the first 9-points of the game, forcing the Builders to call a timeout to slow down the momentum. Out for the timeout, Apprentice stepped up their defensive pressure, not allowing Washington Adventist to put any points on the board.  However, they would break through at the 4-minute mark to push their lead to 11-points.  Jordan Wilson gave the Builders their first point of the game, converting 1-2 free throws and that was followed by an Ashawnti Williams layup to trim the score to 11-3.  The Shock would, once again, answer but Kerrigan Smalls drained a 3-pointer from the wing to pull to within 7-points of the lead and the quarter would come to an end with the Shock holding the advantage 15-8.

Ashawnti Williams got things going to start the second quarter when she hit a short jumper, but Washington Adventist came back down the court to get 2-points of their own.  However, Jamica Jones was able to cut the lead to 5-points after taking a pass from Williams, converting a baseline jumper.  The Shock kept attacking the basket and with 7:17 remaining in the half, they would hold a 9-point advantage, 21-12 and then proceed to go on a run to get their largest lead of the game, 31-12.  Ashawnti Williams was able to put a few more pints on the board for Apprentice, but as the teams headed to the locker Washington Adventist would lead by a score of 38-20.

The Shock came out of the locker draining a 3-pointer, as the third quarter got underway.  However, Jordan Wilson answered by hitting 2 free throws to get the lead under 20-points, 41-22.  Brittney Jones was able to hit a short jumper, but Washington Adventist's offense continued to have success and with 5:52 left in the half, they found themselves ahead, 48-24.  Kerrigan Smalls found some success behind the 3-point line and pulled the Builders to within 19-points but that did not last long as the Shock, once again, drained a 3-pointer from the wing.  Eventually, Washington Adventist had their largest lead of the game, 26-ponts, and as the quarter was over, Apprentice would trail 56-32.

The fourth and final quarter began with Ashawnti Williams being fouled and she proceeded to make both of her free throws.  The Shock would then take advantage of several offensive rebounds, which resulted in two 3-pointers to increase their advantage to 62-34.  Williams continued to provide scoring for the Builders, as did Kerrigan Smalls, who converted back-to-back 3-pointers, forcing Washington Adventist to call a timeout.  However, their scoring could not cut into the lead enough and as as the game came to an end, Apprentice would fall by a final score of 72-46.

The Builders were led on the night by Ashawnti Williams who finished the game with a double-double, scoring 23 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.  Kerrigan Smalls also contributed by adding 14 points on the night.  Apprentice will have a quick turnaround as they return to action Thursday night against EMAC foe Regent University.  The game is the first part of a double header and tip-off is scheduled for 5:00pm.
