Box Score Buena Vista, VA – The Apprentice Baseball team traveled to Southern Virginia on Tuesday for a non-conference match-up between two teams looking to get back in the win column. The Builders, ranked #5 in the USCAA National Poll, were also trying to stay in contention for this year's Small College World Series. However, they would first have to get by the Trojans, who are an NCAA DIII and USA South member.
After falling behind 7-2 in the 4th inning, the Builder's bats came alive and staged a 5-run comeback to take the game against Southern Virginia into extra innings. Kyle Whitlock began the rally, in the 7th inning, with a 2-run HR to pull Apprentice to within 3 runs, 7-4. In the 9th, Thomas Packert, Whitlock and Matt Phoebus engineered another rally, to tie the game at 7-7, sending the game into extra innings. Apprentice would just need two more innings to complete the comeback, as Logan Mize and Riggs Ellis combined for 4 RBI's, sealing the win 11-7.
Packert led the Builders on the day, going 4-6, scoring 3 runs with 2 RBI's. He also pitched the final 3 innings, striking out 8 batters. Apprentice will be back on the road April 14th, as they travel to Petersburg, VA for a rematch with Virginia State University. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm.
