HAMPTON - The Apprentice School wrestling team knocked off two more opponents Saturday to claim fifth place at the Virginia Duals, finishing the weekend 3-1 with the lone loss coming to the eventual champion Kutztown.

The Builders started off the day with a 38-7 thrashing of Johns Hopkins. Lucas Vannostrand started the match with a 15-0 technical fall at 125 before Bruno Alves won by fall in just 27 seconds at 133. David Norris kept it going at 149 with a 10-2 major decision.

Leading 15-7 at the halfway point of the match, the Builders rattled off five straight wins to finish the match. Landon Kissell won a tight 8-6 decision at 165, Ethan Baker won via 16-1 tech fall at 174, Josh Seaton won 10-2 for a major decision at 184, Matthew Henson took down an 18-3 tech fall at 197 and DJ Uribes won via fall at 285 to get to the final score.

That set up Apprentice to wrestle Elizabethtown for fifth place. Vannostrand won a 14-7 decision before Alves won a thriller of a match by decision, 7-6, using his riding time point to get the win. Jakob Brown kept the momentum with a 14-0 major decision at 141, and Norris got a late fall to push the lead to 16-0 right off the bat.

The Blue Jays got a decision win at 157 to cut into the lead, but Landon Kissell got Apprentice back on the scoreboard with a fall in 80 seconds to push the lead back to 22-3. Elizabethtown got a decision win followed by back-to-back falls to cut the lead all the way down to 22-18, setting up the final match at 285.

Caleb Hartung found himself in a dogfight as he was taken down straight to his back. He battled out and avoided the pinfall, but found himself down 7-0 before finding a reversal and a turn that became a win via fall at the 2:02 mark of the first period to seal the win for Apprentice.

The fifth place finish at the Virginia Duals is the best finish for Apprentice since finishing fourth in 2018. It is the third time the Builders have finished in the top five at the event in its history.

Apprentice will be back in action in one week as they host the Builder Invitational. Wrestling will begin at 8 a.m. at Building 601 at the football field.
