NEWPORT NEWS - The Apprentice School men's wrestling team competed in a pair of events this weekend, taking part in the ECU Duals and the New Standard Invitational.
At the ECU Duals,
Aiden Vasquez went 2-0, bumping up to 141 pounds for the event. Vasquez took down NCAA National Qualifier Evan Slack in the event, taking him down in the final 20 seconds to secure an 8-7 win.
Conor Shadle also went 2-0 on the weekend, while
Anthony Swink,
David Norris and
Jack Landauer each won their only matches in the event.
In the New Standard Invitational, the Builders finished 14th in a loaded field full of national qualifiers.
Michael Phoutasen continued his stellar start to his collegiate career, going 6-1 on the weekend to finish third in the tournament. His only loss on the weekend came by 11-6 decision, but he was able to avenge that loss by beating Ursinus's Andrew Shaen in their rematch, 12-2.
Also in the event, freshman
DJ Wince went 2-2 at 157 pounds, while
Jalen Terry-Winston went 4-2 at 285, falling in the blood round to just miss the podium.
The Builders are back on the mat next weekend as they defend their title in the Cougar Duals, hosted by Averett.
