NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Leading up to Hall of Fame Weekend and the Induction Ceremony in September, The Apprentice School Department of Athletics is highlighting each member of this year's Hall of Fame class. Today, the spotlight is on former assistant baseball coach William "Buddy" Denton.
Denton spent 19 seasons as an assistant for the Builder baseball program, from 2000 to 2019, helping guide Apprentice to the program's first-ever national championship in 2007 and a second title in 2015. Before arriving at Apprentice, he spent 27 years coaching at Kecoughtan High School and four seasons as an assistant at Christopher Newport University. It was at Kecoughtan that Denton coached a young Bryan Cave, the future Apprentice head coach who would go on to bring Denton onto his staff in 2000.
Denton's coaching legacy has been recognized well beyond The Apprentice School. In April 2013, Kecoughtan High School named its baseball field in his honor, a lasting tribute to his decades of service to the program.
A 1958 graduate of Hampton High School, Denton went on to play baseball at Old Dominion University, where he earned his degree in Physical Education in 1962.
Tickets for the 2026 Hall of Fame Weekend festivities, including the golf tournament and induction ceremony, are on sale now at the link above. Stay tuned throughout the rest of the summer as we continue to highlight the legacies that this year's inductees left at Apprentice.
