Box Score NEWTON, N.J. - The Apprentice School saw their record improve to 8-1 Saturday as the Builders took down Sussex County Community College, 44-0.
The Builders have now won eight games for just the fifth time in program history. Most recently, the Builders went 9-3 in 2018, but also won eight games in 1922 (8-1), 1981 (8-1) and 1987 (8-2).
In the win, quarterback Mason Tatum threw for 237 yards, breaking the single season passing record along the way. Tatum currently sits north of 1,900 passing yards on the season, well surpassing the previous record for a single season.
The Builders got on the board on their second possession of the game, going 78 yards on 11 plays and chewing up nearly eight minutes of clock as Curtis Green punched it in from four yards out to take a 7-0 lead midway through the first. Five minutes later, Lawrence Reed found the endzone from the three-yard line to double the Apprentice lead through the first quarter.
Green would score again at the start of the second quarter, this time from three yards out to stretch the Builder lead to 21-0. After a quiet majority of the quarter, Apprentice capped off the first half as Tatum found Nick Pierce in the endzone for an 8-yard touchdown to take a 28-0 lead into halftime.
The Builders started off the second half driving into field goal range, setting up Jeremiah Morgan to hit a record 49-yard field goal and take a 31-0 lead. Five minutes later, Green scored his third touchdown of the day, another three yard score to take a 37-0 lead before Logan Mize caught a 9-yard pass from Tatum in the fourth to get to the final score.
The Builder defense held the Skylanders to just 42 yards of offense of which Sussex only had seven rushing yards.
Ta'Kevion Petty finished with 156 yards receiving on just nine catches.
Apprentice will now turn their attention to the Neptune Bowl next week against a team to be named after tomorrow's NCAA Division III Football Selection Show. The highest finishing ODAC team not in the playoffs will be the opponent next Saturday at 2 p.m.
